Why does the entire Indian subcontinent smell like human feces?

I don't understand how an entire chunk of the planet's surface can smell this bad. But as soon as I got off of the plane from London to Mumbai, I was slapped in the face at how bad this country smells. Do you not have sewage processing plants? Do you bathe in your own waste? What's the deal?
